Parallel parking practice for your G2 test
Updated 21 September 2026
Parallel parking practice should build safe observation and control. There is no single steering reference that fits every car, parking space and driver position. Use the official handbook and practise with a qualified accompanying driver or instructor.
Choose a suitable practice space
Start in a permitted, quiet place with good visibility and ample room. Check restrictions, signs, driveways, cyclists and pedestrians. Your instructor can help choose a space appropriate to your current ability.
Observe before every movement
Check mirrors and look around the vehicle before moving. Keep observing while reversing, and stop if someone enters the space or you are unsure it is clear. A camera or sensor is an aid, not a replacement for looking.
Keep the manoeuvre controlled
Work slowly enough to stop promptly and make a safe correction. Ask your instructor to explain steering references for the car you use, then practise in different suitable spaces rather than memorising one setup.
Review what needs work
After each attempt, consider your observation, speed control, positioning and final clearance. If a correction is needed, check the surroundings again before moving.
G2 and G preparation are different
Parallel parking is a useful everyday skill. DriveTest currently describes a modified G test at full-time centres that omits some manoeuvres already assessed at G2. Check the current requirements for your own appointment.
