Highway driving preparation for your G test
Updated 21 September 2026
G-test preparation includes highway driving, observation, lane changes and maintaining safe space. Practise on roads appropriate to your licence and ability with the required accompanying driver. The test route is chosen by the examiner and can vary.
Build experience before booking
DriveTest asks G-test applicants about recent highway experience. Its guidance requires at least five trips in the previous three months on qualifying roads and asks for their average distance. Read the official guidance and declare your actual experience accurately.
Practise observation and space
Plan ahead, check mirrors and blind spots, and look for a safe gap before changing lanes. Do not assume another driver will make room. Your instructor can help you practise judging gaps and responding calmly to changing traffic.
Use an appropriate speed
Follow posted limits and adjust for traffic, weather and road conditions. Highway limits vary; a fixed target such as 100 km/h is not correct for every road or situation. Practise smooth acceleration and controlled speed changes.
Prepare for entry and exit
Read signs early and plan your lane position. Practise the entry and exit procedures in the official handbook with your instructor. If you miss an exit, continue safely rather than make a sudden correction.
Check the current test format
DriveTest currently lists a modified G road test at full-time centres. Part-time travel points can use the standard test. Verify the current format and requirements before your appointment.
